On March 30, 2007, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities openned for signature and ratification. Historically, the United States has been a world leader in the recognition of disability rights. On April 9, 2007, the disability, human rights, and international development communities will come together to examine the Convention, its guarantees, and its implications for US law and foreign policy. The Center for Human Rights at American University, Washington College of Law is sponsoring a conference on April 9, 2007, to consider strategies for encouraging US government and public support for the Convention and examine how we can ensure continued US leadership in the international protection of disability rights. Among our many panelists will be John Lancaster, President, US International Council on Disabilities & National Council on Independent Living and Gov. Dick Thornburgh.
The Center will be offering a live webcasting of the conference on our website. This means that people from anywhere in the world will be able to watch the conference from their computers and e-mail questions to the speakers that will be answered at the end of each panel. The webcast will be available as a link on the Center's homepage at http://www.wcl.american.edu/humright/center. For more information about the event, please visit our homepage or contact us by phone (202-274-4180) or e-mail (humlaw@wcl.american.edu).
